Since meeting in a textiles class at school, Cassandra Wheat and Louise Pannell have woven a path together that traverses a Masters in Milan, designing for Viktor & Rolf in Amsterdam and visual merchandising in London. But it’s their newest collaboration that has kept them on home soil for now; a studio and shop space at The Compound Interest in Collingwood that’s housed their young label, Chorus, since February.

After navigating the online retail terrain for the first part of their design adventure, Wheat and Pannell felt it was time to give their growing customer base a platform to experience their wares before buying. And as Wheat explains, The Compound Interest’s collaborative nature fits in snugly with their own design values.

“As we invite others into the creative process of designing the collections, we wanted to extend this interest in being surrounded by like-minded creatives into the space as well,” Wheat says. “It’s great to be surrounded by a group of people that are constantly doing interesting things.”

The store houses the duo’s first collection, which debuts the Chorus concept of collaborating with a different designer or artist for each season. Titled The Wardrobe, the range features the printed work of design duo and friends Pinar Demirdag and Viola Renate (who have also worked with the likes of Nike, Adidas and Dazed & Confused magazine), their ecstatic prints cast across everything from crisp shirting to a killer bomber-tracksuit combination. Other pieces are more refined, with loose and tailored separates crafted from silk, linen and wool.

The Chorus space functions as both a shop and studio, affording customers the opportunity to watch the pattern making and toiling process while the store is open. “Fashion is so much about tactility and being able to touch things,” says Wheat. “Although the online store is important for us, we feel like people still need a space where they can touch and try things on.”
