Last night we joined the crowd of fashion fans making their way through the Docklands and into the gates of L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival’s opening party, presented by David Jones and supported by Broadsheet and Nova 100. Inside, a buzzing open air block party was well under way.
Blocks 9 and 14 had been transformed into an avenue for a continuous flow of people sipping bubbles, mingling and looking sharp. Well known faces such as burlesque and lingerie queen Dita Von Teese (and her entourage), Australia’s Next Top Model winner Montana Cox and event ambassadors Aimee Mullins and Megan Gale were spotted in the crowd.
Musical acts Andy Murphy, Nfa and DJ Peril and Van She Tech set the tone for the night while party goers enjoyed tasty treats including chips, teriyaki chicken skewers and mini pizzas all supplied by LMFF. The final musical act for the night, Canyons, turned up the heat with one of their first live performances complete with some a light show of fireworks.
The party featured two sold out runway parades to open the festival – one at 7.30pm, the other at 9pm – which saw the crowd pack into every available seat to watch Australian models Alexandra Agostin, Louise van de Vorst, Sam Harris, Kate Peck and Alice Burdeu hit the runway wearing the latest autumn/winter wear.
Samantha Harris opened the show slinking down the catwalk in a stunning silver number from Project D by Dannii Minogue. camilla and marc’s fruity collection oozed femininity and inspired a sense of nostalgia, while Josh Goot brought the modern, sleek side of fashion to the forefront with long, sheer white blouses, tightly fitted pants and jersey dresses. Dion Lee came down the catwalk with sharp colour blocking as Bianca Spender showcased her collection of long sheer dresses and suiting in bright yellow, orange and blue. And for the men Calibre’s collection of dapper chino’s and smart jackets were looking good for the cooler months ahead.
If you couldn’t make it to the LMFF opening party, the festival continues every night until Thursday March 15. Check back daily for updates on the LMFF goings-on, starting tomorrow with our take on L'Oreal Paris Runway 1 and the Penthouse Mouse Midmouse Runway.
