Now Open: Bassike’s New Melbourne Flagship Feels More Like a Mid-Century-Modern Home Than a Boutique

For the past 17 years, Australian fashion label Bassike – known for its minimalist aesthetic – has helped define what the modern Australian wardrobe looks like.
Founded by Deborah Sams and Mary Lou Ryan in 2006 as a small pop-up boutique on Sydney’s northern beaches, Bassike has burgeoned into a handful of standalone stores across Australia – including a recently opened Melbourne flagship in Armadale.
Long-time Bassike collaborator Akin Atelier was enlisted to design the High Street store. It has the feel of a mid-century-modern home – with warm, welcoming timber and a woolly, moss-green modular Jardan sofa – that stands in contrast to the coastal vibes of the label’s Sydney stores. An artwork by Melbourne-based contemporary landscape artist Eleanor Millard takes pride of place in the centre of the space.
In-store, you can shop Bassike’s playful new resort wear collection that was inspired by the Great Barrier Reef and life under water. “The colours, shapes and textures of the reef are mirrored in the silhouettes, prints and styling of the collection, with the signature details and considered ethos that Bassike is known for,” Sams tells Broadsheet. It features statement colours, intricate cut-out garments and sheer knitwear. But you’ll also find all the classic Bassike core, jersey and accessories collections for men, women and kids.
Plus, up a hidden set of stairs is a light-flooded mezzanine level with a private seating and dressing area that offers an extra-luxe shopping experience.
