There’s something about creating your own little piece of art. It’s your own stamp of individuality. Like a finger painting in kindergarten or that hand sewn patchwork quilt that will eventually be handed down the generations, it’s something that conjures a sense of nostalgia and pride.

The State of Design festival is bringing crafty back with their Art For Your Feet event, which sees Flinders Lane’s Obüs boutique team up with eco-friendly footwear label Melissa to host a transformative fashion workshop via the label’s latest collaboration with Italian-bred, New York-based architect, artist and designer Gaetano Pesce.

Melissa is no stranger to designer collaborations, with fashion heavyweights of the likes of Jean Paul Gautier and Vivienne Westwood having whipped up much sought after styles in the past. The label’s new collaboration with Pesce, however, has yielded an ankle boot that effectively blurs the line between architecture and fashion.

Composed entirely of interconnecting circles, Melissa’s Gaetano Pesce boot has been specially created to be deconstructed and customised, giving participants an opportunity to get their hands dirty and transform their boot into their very own piece of art. All you need is your creativity, imagination and design flair, as materials will be supplied for you to cut, paint, draw and stick to your heart’s desire.

The customised boots will be on exhibition at the Obüs store until the end of the festival, after which you can collect and wear your newly designed shoe. Manolo Blahnik, eat your heart out.
