Founder and Chief Barber Nick Downie has refined the art of keeping things simple, a trait that has made All the King’s Men’s first home on Errol Street rather popular already.
Downie opened All the King’s Men after a long tenure at Fitzroy barber of distinction, Dr Follicles, working from the simple brief that he open the kind of place where he would like to get his hair cut. His penchant for antique barber’s accoutrements, cheerful Día de los Muertos skeletons, tasteful taxidermy, soul, hip-hop and the odd spot of metal slipping from the speakers, means that many others want to be there too.
Because getting a haircut on a Saturday can be like queuing for a cafe down the road, Downie has decided to relocate to a bigger digs around the corner on Queensberry Street. All the King’s Men (mark II) provides a much-needed boost to the waiting room, another couple of chairs (one of which needs a new barber) and more posters of Italian movie stars.

SUBSCRIBE NOWUnchanged, however, are the vintage fittings, stylish cuts and idiosyncratic tunes.
“Music is the most important element,” says Downie, who’s only encouraging the street-party vibe by inviting DJ’s to select on Saturday afternoons.
Haircuts are $27.50 and buzz cuts are $15 (as is a tidy-up between proper cuts). There are no appointments, so you’ll just have to show up and wait your turn, like everyone else.
