World Refugee Day Telethon 2018
The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre – a not-for-profit organisation offering mental health support, safe housing, medical aid and food to asylum seekers – is hosting its third annual telethon on Wednesday June 20, as part of World Refugee Day.
Callers will be assisted by the likes of Melbourne musicians Jen Cloher and Courtney Barnett, and radio personality Father Bob Maguire, who will be taking donations all day. Ambassadors for the day will include media commentator Leila Gurruwiwi; Hunters and Collectors frontman Mark Seymour; and Tamie Fraser, wife of the late former-Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser.
In 2017, the telethon raised $660,000 – double the amount for 2016. The ASRC estimates that some 12,000 asylum seekers may become homeless in the next month – a figure that well exceeds the more than 5000 refugees they assisted last year.
The event will also be broadcast on Triple R and ABC ME.
You can donate on the day by calling 1300 692 772 (1300 MYASRC) or online at asrc.org.au/telethon.
If you'd like to donate now you can text “HOPE” to 0437 371 371 to pledge $20.
