Weave in Wool: Wall Hanging at Collingwood Yards
Heide are partnering with The Social Studio at Collingwood Yards to present a weaving workshop led by textile artist and weaver Muhubo Sulieman.
Muhubo is a self-taught weaver who grew up in Somalia, where she learned a variety of cultural weaving and sewing skills from an early age. Muhubo specialises in handmade traditional rugs, bags and wall decorations that showcase her traditional Somali craft and cultural heritage.
Recent events have put an Australian spin on her work. Somalia is currently experiencing a decade-long drought, which has greatly impacted the availability of customary materials. It’s seen Muhubo experiment with indigenous Australian grasses and plants to continue her environmentally sustainable and environmentally conscious practice.
In this afternoon workshop at The Social Studio, Muhubo will teach participants how to create a wall hanging of brightly coloured wool using traditional Somali weaving techniques.
Admission, workshop, materials and a glass of wine are included. No prior weaving experience necessary.
Broadsheet is a proud media partner of Heide.
