Experts discuss the challenges and opportunities facing China as it undergoes a transformative shift under its National New Urbanization Plan.

Moderated by Dr Pippa Dickson, Asialink’s arts director, Visions of Chinese Urbanism gives you the chance to hear from two leading voices on Chinese urbanism. Cultural strategist and design critic Beatrice Lanza has been based in Beijing for more than 16 years, and was formerly the creative director of Beijing Design Week. In this discussion at NGV’s Design Week, she’ll speak on the changing scale and social space of Chinese architecture.

Speaking to China’s ongoing appetite for making new cities is Jing Liu, co-founder of New York-based architecture and design firm SO–IL. She emphasises the importance of engaging with sociopolitical issues as they relate to architecture, and will bring that experience to this vital conversation.

Now in this third year, Melbourne Design Week runs from March 14 to 24. Presented by the NGV’s Department of Contemporary Design and Architecture, the annual international design event features more than 200 talks, exhibitions, tours and workshops exploring how design can shape the future.
