Art, architecture and streetscape have all combined at the top end of Bourke Street in Melbourne CBD's for Uptown: An Art Exhibition For Our City.
The City of Melbourne commissioned 26 contemporary artists – curated by Fiona Scanlan and Robert Buckingham – and matched them up with vacant shopfronts, restaurants, store windows, building exteriors and laneways to transform the area into an outdoor art gallery that's open to the public 24/7.
There's a 17-metre billboard of a woman photographed by Bill Henson, floating above the city lights; a colourful installation by Peter Atkins inspired by the tawdry glamour of the 80s; paintings by Archibald Prize winner Louise Hearman in the windows of Grossi Florentino and Cellar Bar; laneway posters of Destiny Deacon's work to accompany her retrospective at NGV Australia; an ode to disco costumes and mirror balls by performance artists The Huxleys; and more.
Uptown runs from December 15, 2020 to February 28, 2021.
