Cancelled: Torch the Place
This event has been cancelled due to coronavirus concerns. Arts Centre Melbourne has cancelled all scheduled events and performances until April 12.
Critically-acclaimed author, television personality, podcaster, documentary presenter, and the driving force behind SBS sitcom The Family Law, Benjamin Law is one of Australia’s best-loved writers.
Now he’s bringing his sharp sense of humour to the stage with his first play, Torch the Place.
Teresa’s mum lives in a museum filled with irreplaceable treasures. Well, they’re treasures to her ¬– everyone else thinks she’s a hoarder. Unable to let anything go (including grudges), she’s thrilled when her three children return home to help celebrate her 60th birthday. There’s just one thing they haven’t told her: this isn’t a reunion, it’s an intervention. And everything’s got to go.
Celebrated director Dean Bryant (The Lady in the Van) leads an all-star cast including Fiona Choi (The Family Law), Michelle Lim Davidson (An Ideal Husband), Diana Lin (Little Emperors), Charles Wu (Mosquitoes) and Max Brown (Glitch).
Developed as part of Melbourne Theatre Company’s NEXT STAGE Writers’ Program, which commissions and presents new Australian works for theatre, Torch the Place is an honest, relatable look at a serious problem, filtered through Law’s effortless wit to show us a family that finds joy in the clutter.
