Sydney wunderkind Junda Khoo has opened not just one, but three of the best restaurants of this year, all in the one CBD complex. The flagship is the same brand that’s made the Malaysian Australian chef such a star in Sydney: Ho Jiak. (Ho Liao and Da Bao certainly aren’t letting the team down, though.)
Broadsheet ’s inaugural Dine Out festival, a city-wide celebration of our best chefs, restaurants and more, is all about collaboration – the more unexpected, the better. And in typical fashion, Khoo has pulled together an absolute doozy on that front.
He’s invited down a sushi master and a steak master, both based in Sydney, for a dinner that promises flavours from Japan, Malaysia and Europe. The event will begin with sashimi and nigiri made by Toshihiko Oe, the master behind six-seat omakase restaurant Sushi Oe, plus snack like laksa bombs and XO butter scallops by Khoo. To conclude, Corey Costelloe, the esteemed chef behind Sydney’s 20 Chapel (number 93 on the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants list in 2025), will be grilling David Blackmore full-blood Wagyu and sending out sides to match. Don’t miss this one.
