Storm Boy

Mon 17th June, 2019 – Sat 20th July, 2019
Southbank Theatre, The Sumner
Pelicans, shipwrecks and sailors – a puppet-led performance of an Australian classic.

In this co-production with Queensland Theatre, Colin Thiele’s much-loved children’s story is adapted for the stage with a collection of astonishing life-sized puppets created by the Brisbane-based Dead Puppet Society.

Adapted by playwright Tom Holloway (Double Indemnity), this moving new production featuring John Batchelor (Red Dog) and Tony Briggs (Cleverman) is directed by Sam Strong, who again brings his magic to another timeless coming-of-age story, just as he did with Melbourne Theatre Company’s Helpmann Award-winning production of Jasper Jones in 2016.

Storm Boy (aka Mike) and his reclusive father live in a secluded shack on South Australia’s wild and remote Coorong coast. After befriending a local Ngarrindjeri man, Storm Boy discovers three orphaned pelican chicks and decides to take them in. What follows is a remarkable journey of discovery that will change his life forever.

Suitable for ages 11 plus this is a show for the whole family to enjoy. MTC is running a school holiday special for adults to attend at kids prices for performances between June 27 – July 14. Offer applies for minimum two children. T&Cs apply.
