Spanish Club Block Party
Fans of Johnston Street’s Spanish Club, Hogar Español, can enjoy one last hurrah before its redevelopment in the coming months.
The project by Melbourne-based development company GURNER will include a new Spanish restaurant and clubroom on the lower level managed by the existing club committee, as well as the 32-apartment Spanish Club Residences. Works are expected to be completed late next year.
Before construction begins on the new restaurant and apartment block, the club is hosting a final Spanish Block Party, the proceeds from which will go towards funding equipment and supplies for the new restaurant.
As an original founder of the Johnston Street Fiesta, the Spanish Club has worked for decades to bring Spanish society and festivity to Melbourne.
The club’s final block party will feature a "demolition room", where partygoers can unleash their creativity on the building with spray paint before construction begins. There will be free sangria, and you can try Spanish wine and street food provided by some of Johnston Street Fiesta's favourite vendors. Expect live flamenco performances, and join in on the Spanish dancing lessons.
The party will also feature a boot-sale of the club's memorabilia and old equipment, ranging from kitchen and live performance gear, to furniture and décor, as well as designer furniture from developer GURNER’s recent display suites. The proceeds from the sale will go to the club committee, a voluntary group of members that has managed the club since its establishment in 1969.
This is your last opportunity to enjoy a salsa (both dance or tomato-based) before the Hogar Español (“Spanish home”) of Melbourne undergoes its transformation.
