Thai New Year celebrations get a Melbourne twist with a festive new set menu that includes pork belly skewers, porterhouse krapow, jasmine rice panna cotta and more – for a limited time only.

Every year, businesses in Thailand stop to observe the Thai New Year, known as Songkran. Here in Melbourne it’s business as usual, but that doesn’t mean you can’t join in the festivities.

Southeast Asian diner Salted Egg (inside Quincy Hotel on Flinders Lane) has a special menu that’ll transport your tastebuds to Thailand. Between Tuesday April 9 and Saturday April 13, it’s switching gears to offer a street food-inspired menu in homage to the Thai street food vendors who keep hungry bellies full throughout the new-year closures.

Executive chef Adam Woodfield (Chin Chin, Jimmy Liks in Sydney) and his team have planned a week-long set menu for Songkran featuring traditional Thai favourites and contemporary expressions of flavours from across Southeast Asia.

Expect smaller plates like corn and shiso leaf fritters, northern-Thai pork belly skewers and hoi tod (mussel pancakes), and meaty mains like deep fried chicken, porterhouse kaprow and grilled king prawns. For dessert, there’s baked taro cake, dark chocolate and calamansi mousse, and jasmine rice panna cotta.
