A haunting exploration of the aftermath of loss, presented by Melbourne International Arts Festival and Arts Centre Melbourne.

This month, Arts Centre Melbourne will present the critically-acclaimed dance and theatre piece Song for a Weary Throat. The charged performance, by the ensemble Rawcus, won four Green Room nominations upon its 2017 premiere and will return as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival.

Song for a Weary Throat is a series of vignettes, both devastating and uplifting, that confront the moments following a great trauma. Set in an abandoned dance hall in the wake of a disaster, the wordless performance uses physical and musical expression to depict the tumult of emotions in the aftermath of catastrophe.

Rawcus is a celebrated theatre ensemble of performers with and without disability, led by artistic director Kate Sulan. Weaving together dance, theatre and visual art disciplines, Rawcus performances are characterised by intense physicality and arresting visual imagery. They have appeared in the programs of Dance Massive, Next Wave and Melbourne Fringe. Song for a Weary Throat also features an ethereal soundscape created by the Invenio Singers, a vocal ensemble that specialises in expansive, celestial sounds.

After the performance on Thursday October 11, artistic director of Theatre Works, Bryce Ives, will be appearing for a post-show Q&A.
