The Smashing Machine Film Screening at Fomo Cinemas
Wed Oct 08, 2025
Fomo Cinemas
5 Bluestone Way, Brunswick East
We’re used to seeing wrestler-turned-screen-icon Dwayne Johnson in big blockbuster flicks – the unstoppable leading man who always wins the day. Now he’s teamed up with an indie director (Benny Safdie) for something a little rougher and more real in The Smashing Machine. And Broadsheet members can see it for free at a private screening this October.
“This is the first time I’ve not thought about the box office,” Johnson has said of his newest flick, which is less a statement on the film’s success than of his new mission to step away from pure money makers and create more substantial cinema fare.
Co-starring Emily Blunt (another tentpole regular) The Smashing Machine is a “bracing, clear-eyed and laceratingly human sports biopic” (per Variety), telling the story of UFC fighter Mark Kerr.
The film reveals both sides of Kerr (Johnson in heavy prosthetic make-up): the presentable showbiz hero, and the smashing machine powered by uncontrollable rage. All the while, he navigates a tumultuous relationship with his girlfriend, Dawn (Blunt). Under director Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems, Good Time) the duo create a tense and, yes, action-packed drama worthy of the big screen.
