Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes at Southbank Theatre
Melbourne Theatre Company marks its post-pandemic mainstage return with Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, Canadian playwright Hannah Moscovitch’s eye-opening exploration of power, truth and desire.
The play tells the story of Jon and Annie. Jon is a prize-winning novelist onto his third marriage and stuck at university teaching creative writing to a bunch of lazy undergraduates. Annie is his prized student – clever, imaginative and a huge fan of his work. The two begin an affair that soon spirals out of control, but when the embers have cooled and the affair is over, who will control their narrative? Moscovitch steers the audience through nuance and bias to deliver a twist with incisive precision.
MTC’s production is directed by Petra Kalive and stars Dan Spielman (The Code) as Jon and Izabella Yena (Kerosene) as Annie.
