Ring in the winter solstice at this after-hours, adults-only celebration of science, curiosity and the mysteries of the universe.

The longest night and shortest day of the year are upon us. On Friday June 21, Scienceworks invites visitors to celebrate the winter solstice with an exclusive one-night-only event.

Scienceworks After Dark builds on the popularity of its sellout Planetarium Nights, Scienceworks’ answer to Melbourne Museum’s Nocturnal event series. A rare opportunity to experience the beloved institution at night, Scienceworks After Dark opens all its ground floor exhibitions for after-hours, adults-only access.

Explore the sensory play space of Ground Up before heading into the temporary exhibition Air Playground, complete with a giant inflatable and paper plane hangar. Race against Cathy Freeman and other legendary Australian sportspeople at Sportsworks, and discover timeless technology at Think Ahead.

Entry to Scienceworks After Dark also includes access to the Planetarium, where you can soak up your choice of one of three full-dome film experiences. What’s in the Sky Tonight: Solstice Edition (6.30pm) sheds light on the astronomy behind the solstice; The Dark Matter Mystery (7.30pm) explores the mysterious side of space, physics and the universe; and Space Tour (9pm) is a cruise through some of outer space’s visual marvels, from auroras and nebulae to black holes and supernovas.

Elsewhere there’ll be live music and performers like DJ Kelsie Cosmic, solstice-themed craft activities, an interactive photo booth, snacks and drinks like mulled wine and hot choccy.

Separate tickets are available for visitors who want to skip the Planetarium and enjoy the museum only. Your Scienceworks After Dark ticket also gets you free entry to Grazeland next door at 20 Booker Street, Spotswood.
