Kensington’s sustainable corner cafe is opening in the evenings for the first time, so you can enjoy a hearty two-course dinner served by trainees in the social enterprise’s hospitality program.

Since launching in 2010, social enterprise Scarf has helped more than 300 young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds with hospitality training, paid work experience and networks for finding employment in the industry.

And for 10 weeks, it’s bringing back the Autumn Scarf Dinners series, where you can have a delicious meal served by Scarf trainees, using their newly learned front-of-house skills in a supportive and collaborative environment.

This time around it’s being held at Cassette, a new, sustainably minded corner cafe in Kensington with a seasonal, hyperlocal and stripped-back menu. This is also the first time the venue is opening for dinner service.

Head chef Laura Boulton was a Scarf mentor in 2014. “I know first-hand how life-changing this program can be for these young people. Seeing how safe and inclusive these programs are and how much trainees would grow in confidence each week, both in themselves and their new skill sets, was incredibly rewarding to be a part of,” she says in a statement.

The two-course menu, crafted by Boulton and her kitchen team, includes snacks (Mount Zero olives and Loafer sourdough), and your choice of entree (charred king oyster mushroom, Bass Strait scallops with cashew cream, or lamb rib with peanut sambal) and mains (charred cabbage with herby white beans and squash, blue-eye cod with prawn broth and chorizo oil, whole-roasted cauliflower, or a roasted half-chicken to share).

Tickets are $55 per person.
