Rekospective: The Art of Reko Rennie at NGV Australia
For more than 20 years, Kamilaroi interdisciplinary artist Reko Rennie has created artworks that combine personal narratives, cultural iconography, graffiti and the built environment. Subverting romantic ideas of Aboriginal identity, Rennie’s work often interrogates how Indigenous culture shows up in contemporary urban settings.
REKOSPECTIVE is a large-scale, immersive exhibition charting Rennie’s rich and varied career. Resisting a chronological display, the exhibition allows audiences to navigate Rennie’s works freely, exploring the intersections between culture, politics and identity from Rennie’s unique First Nations perspective.
Running until January 27, REKOSPECTIVE combines several new works with pieces that have garnered Rennie international recognition over the past 20 years. Those include monumental illuminated works like Remember Me (2020) and Regalia (2013), three-channel video installations, large-scale paintings, photography and more.
