Reconstruct (The) Normative at Fed Square
Every year, Midsumma Festival brings a celebration of LGBTQIA+ arts and culture to Melbourne. This summer, the program extends to the Atrium at Fed Square, where New York-based Australian photographer Soraya Zaman presents a moving exhibition of photographic portraiture entitled Reconstruct (the) Normative.
Over three years spent travelling across the US, Zaman captured a series of images of people in the trans-masculine community. Taken in many locations, from sweeping cities to tiny towns, Zaman’s portraits depict their subjects with sincerity and tenderness.
In 2019, Zaman released the book American Boys, exploring the themes of trans-masculine identity and gender expression. The project continued over several years, amassed a large Instagram following, and now evolves into Reconstruct (the) Normative – the artist’s first-ever solo exhibition.
Open daily from 8am to 11pm, the exhibition also features an audio tour with narrative from the photographer themself. (The audio tour is also available online via the Fed Square website.)
Head down before it finishes up on February 10, and check out the Fed Square website for more free events happening this summer.
