Prahran Market’s Truffle Celebration
Update (July 26): This event has been rescheduled to August 7.
Prahran Market’s Truffle Celebration, an ode to the treasured fungus, is giving Melburnians a chance to taste (and hunt) the seasonal ingredient in a three-hour-long Truffle Trail.
It works just like your typical food trail or walk, with different truffle variations and dishes available at every stop.
There are three menus to choose from, each starring the event’s hero ingredient. The first offers five truffle-centric dishes, including a black-truffle mille-feuille (a savoury take on the layered dessert) from The Food House deli, a buckwheat soba-noodle salad from Kooks Kitchen (with roasted brussels sprouts, enoki mushroom, parsley and freshly grated black truffle) and black-truffle ice-cream– all for $35.50.
The meatier six-dish second menu, for $40.50, features truffle Parmigiano with crackers; Hervey Bay scallops with mornay sauce and truffles; and a truffle, veal and mushroom sausage in a dinner roll. If you’re after everything, the decadent third menu combines all nine dishes and comes in at $65.50.
The Truffle Trail doesn’t start until 2pm, but Prahran Market is hosting truffle-cooking demonstrations before then. Rock up from 11am onwards to see TV chef Tobie Puttock, Damian Pike (Prahran Market’s “mushroom man”), Darren Purchese (Burch & Purchese) and Joe Vargetto (Mister Bianco, Massi) cook the prized morsels and share their truffle tips.
