Sydney Theatre Company’s ground-breaking one-person show makes its Melbourne debut.

Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray is such a beloved classic it’s hard to imagine it feeling refreshingly contemporary in 2022. But a new adaptation by Sydney Theatre Company’s artistic director Kip Williams takes this celebrated tale of hedonism and vanity and electrifies it, reinventing it into an ambitious one-person play starring Eryn Jean Norvill.

From Sunday June 5 you can see the critically lauded spectacle at the Arts Centre Melbourne as part of Rising Festival. Following a much-talked about season in Sydney that was extended twice in 2020, these limited performances mark its highly anticipated Melbourne debut.

Williams, who also directs, has frequent collaborator Norvill play 26 characters in Dorian Gray, the gothic story of an aristocrat’s sinful attempts to defy ageing with chilling consequences. The staging itself is an unconventional mix of live video, cutting-edge contemporary theatre design and lush period drama, reimagining the classic tale for a new subset of theatregoers.

Williams has previously adapted classic plays such as Suddenly Last Summer and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui.

Tickets start at $80.
