Peter and the Starcatcher at Arts Centre Melbourne
You know what happens when Peter Pan first loses his shadow in the Darling house and meets Wendy, John and Michael. You also know what happens when they visit Neverland, join the Lost Boys and evoke the ire of Captain Hook. But do you know what came before?
Award-winning play Peter and the Starcatcher, based on the 2004 novel of the same name, tells the story of Peter, Tink, Hook and Mrs Darling (the kids’ mother) before she was Mrs Darling. First staged in California in 2011, it opened on Broadway in 2013 and won five Tony Awards – including Best Costume Design and Best Scenic Design. Now a new production has landed in Melbourne, following a premiere season in Canberra.
Using more than 100 characters, over 90 puppets, technical wizardry and a colourful set, the play tells the story of how an island becomes Neverland and a nameless boy becomes Peter Pan. Otis Dhanji (who played a young Aquaman in the DC blockbuster) plays Boy, with comedians Peter Helliar and Colin Lane as pirates Smee and Black Stache. Olivia Deeble plays Molly, the future mother of the Darling children, alongside Alison Whyte as her father Lord Aster and a large supporting cast.
Following its Melbourne run, the production will also travel to Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane.
