Pepe’s Winter Chalet at Pepe’s Italian & Liquor

Wed 23rd June, 2021 – Tue 31st August, 2021
275 Exhibition Street Melbourne
The CBD restaurant is transforming its former synagogue home into an Italian ski resort, with snow showers, winter cocktails, a custom sleigh and hearty dishes.

Last summer, Pepe’s Italian & Liquor transformed its 600-square-metre outdoor courtyard into a bustling Italian piazza, complete with a spritz station, bocce court and Boca Gelato cart. So it only makes sense to give the moody Italo-American diner a makeover for winter, too.

Taking cues from Italy’s Dolomite Alps and north-eastern province of South Tyrol, Pepe’s is turning into a winter ski chalet for the season, right down to the snow showers, hot toddies, alpine flags and warming pastas.

Outdoors, a snow machine will recreate the winter wonderlands of Europe. Take a seat in a custom-built sleigh and imagine you’re reindeer spotting (or just pose for a cute snap).

Then head into the ski chalet, decked out with timber skis and other chalet-inspired decorations. Warm up with wintery cocktails such as an Alpine Spritz with elderflower; a rye and bourbon number called Remember the Dolomites; and Heaven’s Glitter, which features lemon myrtle vodka and a sherbet rim.

Hearty new meals from the South Tyrol region join Pepe’s signature spicy vodka rigatoni and veal parmigiana. There’s spaztle tirolesi (handmade spinach pasta with rabbit ragu); casunsei all’ampezzana (half-moon pasta stuffed with beetroot and ricotta); a new pizza topped with wild boar sausage; and smoked-eel crostini.

And the alpine theme doesn’t end in the dining room – it carries on in the bathrooms, too. Listen as the hills come alive with The Sound of Music soundtrack on loop.
