Panton Hill Winery Wine Tasting
It might only be 45 minutes out of Melbourne, but pull into Panton Hill Vineyard and you might feel like you’ve stumbled into southern Europe. Owners Teunis and Dorothy Kwak populate their small family-run vineyard with handsome sandstone buildings that give it the feeling of a rustic French farm. It’s helped create a cellar door that’s approachable and relatively unfussy compared to some of the Yarra Valley’s more highfalutin wineries.
The Kwaks are just as unfussy about their winemaking; they hand-pick their low-yield vines to produce a number of unusual drops – vintage pinot port, a chardonnay liqueur and a sparkling cabernet franc – next to some more traditional sauvignon blancs, pinot noirs and shiraz.
Throughout 2019 the Kwaks are offering exclusive access to monthly tasting events designed to showcase their distinctive wines. This event will see owners Teunis and Dorothy Kwak lead guests on an informative and enjoyable tasting of 10 wines including sweet, dry, sparkling and fortified. Then relax in the courtyard (or in front of the open fire if it’s cool) while enjoying a range of grazing dishes, followed by home-style pizzas. Before dessert, you’ll be invited into the barrel room to learn about the winemaking process and enjoy a barrel tasting of some special vintages. Finish the tasting with homemade tiramisu or a pistachio, hazelnut and chocolate grenache semifreddo. Each course will be accompanied by your choice of matched wine or liqueur.
