Nocturnal x Midsumma
Melbourne Museum’s late-night event series, Nocturnal, is back in 2019 with an electrifying night at the museum combining music, poetry and storytelling. With the spoken-word element curated by one of Australia’s most illustrious (and hilarious) performance artists, Candy Bowers, in response to the museum’s Mandela My Life exhibition, Nocturnal x Midsumma will blend queer and pan-African cultures in power and celebration.
Headlining Nocturnal x Midsummer is South Africa’s glam-pop trailblazer Nakhane, whose startling voice and affecting storytelling has taken him around the world and made his You Will Not Die a cult phenomenon. This is his first visit to Australia, and Melbourne Museum has snagged him for the Nocturnal x Midsummer festivities amid his appearances at Sydney Festival and Mona Foma.
Appearing also is the powerful neo-soul stylings of Okeyno, the unapologetic creativity of the Naarm chapter of the genre-defying cabaret group Cocoa Butter Club, and Bowers herself, who has curated seven voices from across music, theatre and spoken word to throw down alongside Cape Town-born DJ Colette. These queer people of colour performers will all present work that celebrates the intersection of identities and experiences that help foster their art.
All this will take place as expert museum staff presents talks across the venue on the themes of the Mandela exhibition: activism, identity and equality. And, if a whole night of Nocturnal x Midsumma isn’t enough for you, Bowers will lead a series of workshops at Melbourne Museum in the weeks preceding the late-night event based around her renowned power anthem: Decolonise and Moisturise.
From 7pm to 11pm.
