NGV Friday Nights: Pharaoh
The NGV’s blockbuster Pharaoh exhibition, on now until October 6, features the biggest international loan by the British Museum in its 270-year history.
Celebrating 3000 years of ancient Egyptian art and culture, Pharaoh delves into the history and significance of the pharaoh through more than 500 works, spanning sculpture, architecture, papyri, jewellery and more. It’s also the monumental backdrop for the winter reboot of NGV Friday Nights.
Happening for 16 weeks between June and October in the NGV Great Hall, the winter program kicks off with three solo performances from composer, oud player and eight-time Aria Award-winner Joseph Tawadros AM. Over three performances, Tawadros will perform original works that bring together Arabic modes and Western musical styles.
In July, the Australian Art Orchestra curates a series of ensembles spanning jazz, rap and folk music including Roman MC, Meatshell and Koi Kingdom. In August, radio presenter and host of PBS FM’s Flight 1067 to Africa Stani Goma will curate three evenings of sounds from the African continent including the Melbourne African Traditional Ensemble, Fem Belling and Kunjani.
Through August and September, Brunswick venue Tempo Rubato presents a series of nights centred on the sounds of instruments that have been evolving for hundreds of years. In the last three weeks of the program, not-for-profit record label Music in Exile will bring a series of performances including Ajak Kwai, Ausecuma Beats and Kang JJ.
As always, NGV Friday Nights tickets include late-night access to the Pharaoh exhibition. And the Great Hall will also have a dedicated Moët & Chandon bar, a Yering Station wine bar and a selection of Middle Eastern-inspired bites.
