NGV Friday Nights: Cartier

Friday nights at the NGV are getting a glamorous makeover. Coinciding with Cartier, the gallery’s long-running after-dark series offers the chance to explore the blockbuster exhibition at night, alongside a weekly music program shifting throughout the season.

Running from June to October, the line-up brings together some of Melbourne’s key music institutions and collectives. Waxflower, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Wax Museum Records and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s MSO+ will each take over for a residency, presenting performances spanning jazz, classical, soul and contemporary sounds. Artists appearing include Olivia Excuses, Amin Payne and OJ Kush, Yunior Terry Quartet, MSO Cello Quartet and PLEXUS.

Elsewhere, Melbourne Opera will present Diamonds for the Diva across two evenings, celebrating legendary soprano Dame Nellie Melba, an early Cartier client whose jewellery and personal objects feature in the exhibition. A film program will explore the maison’s longstanding relationship with cinema, with screenings of High Society, The Phoenician Scheme and The Great Gatsby on selected nights.

For those keen to embrace the exhibition’s French roots, there’s Fast Friends – a casual French-language social activity presented with Alliance Francaise de Melbourne – plus crepes in the Great Hall, champagne, wine tastings and other gallery snacks.

Admission includes unlimited access to the Cartier exhibition, which brings together almost 400 jewellery pieces and archival objects, many of which are on display in Australia for the first time.
