It’s 50 years since Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel departed for the big boutique in the sky, but her legacy is celebrated in the NGV’s summer Friday Nights series.
Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto is a major exhibition of designs and of more than 100 garments from the renowned French couturière, which runs from December 4 until April 25. On December 10, from 6-10pm, you can explore the exhibition after hours with exclusive access.
Also open on Friday Nights, after its December 17 opening, will be Bark Ladies: Eleven Artists from Yirrkala, a major ground floor exhibition of works by women artists from the Yolngu-run art centre, Buku Larrngay Mulka Centre (Buku), in Northeast Arnhem Land. Highlights will include a newly commissioned large-scale, floor-based work by Naminapu Maymuru-White depicting Milngiyawuy, also known as the Milky Way or River of Stars, greeting visitors on arrival in Federation Court.
But as you’ve come to expect with NGV Friday Nights, there’s much more going on than the exhibition itself. DJ Jimmy James will spin an eclectic set, ranging from boogie to soul, disco, house and jazz funk; and performing as In2Stellar, DJs Georgia Bird and Sarah will entertain in the NGV Garden, where you can catch them from your position at the Four Pillars Gin Bar.
When in need of additional refreshments, channel Ms Chanel by dining on French-inspired food and wine from Victorian vineyard Yering Station, and order a glass of bubbles from – Pommery – one of France’s most renowned Champagne houses.
There are plenty more opportunities to catch Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto after hours – NGV Friday Nights run until April 22, 2022. Live music and DJ highlights are Afrodisiac/Fei Pao (Dec 17), Renee Delay/Simona Castricum (Jan 7) and Banoffee/James Tom (Jan 21).
