The NGV’s after-dark gig series is returning to Friday nights with an ’80s New York-inspired line-up of Australian and international DJs.
From December til April, the NGV will open late for NGV Friday Nights, so you can check out its latest blockbuster exhibition Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines, which features more than 200 works by the American street-art icons, soundtracked by iconic sounds from the city that never sleeps.
Each week DJs will revisit some of the era’s most memorable music including disco, jazz, hip-hop, post-punk and new wave. Natasha Diggs will be flying in from New York for a headline set on February 7, and London duo Alex Rita & Errol, supported by Melbourne’s multi-talented Simona Castricum, will be behind the decks on February 14.
London’s Ruby Savage is booked for February 28, and Detroit’s Nicole Misha will be the final international DJ act, on April 3. Other local talent taking over the decks includes musician Banoffee; DJ collective Wax o’Paradiso’s Edd Fisher; DJ JNETT and Merve.
One of Melbourne’s longest running queer parties, CLOSET has collaborated with the NGV on the CLOSET Disco Bar featuring DJs and performance artists doing pop-up performances throughout the night.
There’ll be gin and tonics by Bombay Sapphire, Asahi beers, Yering Station fine wines and classic American-style street eats. Tickets include access to the exhibition.
