Moulin Rouge! The Musical
While the Broadway production of Moulin Rouge! The Musical is on hold due to Covid-19, Melbourne is gearing up to welcome the Australian-made onstage version of Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-winning 2001 film.
Remixed and rehashed for the stage, the musical features nostalgic pop songs, including Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, No Doubt’s Don’t Speak and Outkast’s So Fresh, So Clean. Of course, you’ll still be able to sing along to movie soundtrack faves Lady Marmalade and Your Song.
The Melbourne production is directed by award-winning US director Alex Timbers, and it stars Alinta Chidzey (Chicago, West Side Story) as courtesan Satine and Des Flanagan (who had a brief role in Neighbours) as bohemian dreamer Christian.
The real MVPs – the ‘Lady Ms’ – will be played by Samantha Dodemaide, Elenoa Rokobaro, Ruva Ngwenya and Christopher J Scalzo. Tim Omaji takes the role of Toulouse-Lautrec, the Duke will be played by Andrew Cook, and club impresario Harold Zidler by Simon Burke AO.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is produced by Australian company Global Creatures, and while the Broadway show is suspended Melbourne is the only place in the world where you can join the bohemian revolution. See it for truth, beauty, freedom – but most of all, love.
