Fed Square

Melbourne

Price: Free

The inimitable Detroit selector is headed back to Melbourne for a free show.

There’s only one Moodymann. DJing and producing since the early 90s, the Detroit legend has one of the record deepest bags around, influenced by growing up on disco, jazz, soul, funk, gospel and other black genres. Names like Carl Craig and Theo Parrish are his closest comparisons.

But aside from an endless collection of obscure bangers, what makes the man born Kenny Dixon Junior such a singular selector is his yapping ability. Yes, really. “How many of ya’ll know what 1994 smells like? Come up here and get a whiff o’ this record,” he might drawl over the mic while mixing into the best house record you’ve never heard of.

In yet another highlight for Fed Square’s outrageously good free music program , Moody will command the square alongside local icon JNETT, whose record bag ain’t exactly shallow either. Expect the same passionate, full-house vibe we saw at Caribou's gig in January.
