Merkado Market at Migrant Coffee
There’s no Chinatown, Koreatown or Thai Town equivalent in Melbourne for Filipino restaurants, shops and businesses. There are many out west, but they’re still spread across Footscray, Werribee, St Albans and Sunshine.
But for one day, local collective The Entree Pinays – which highlights and supports Filipino businesses while spreading awareness about the culture and cuisine – is gathering a number of star entrepreneurs and ventures all in one place.
West Footscray cafe Migrant Coffee – founded by Melodee Malazarte and Stacey Earsman, both daughters of immigrants – is transforming into a market for the day, with fresh coffee and excellent bagels alongside wares from Filipino-owned and operated businesses.
Shop desserts and treats from Sweet Cora Cakes; Philippine-grown, Melbourne-roasted coffee beans from Akasya Kape; house plants and accessories from Green Empire St; Filipino-inspired bubble tea and drinks from Boba Bar; handmade jewellery by Juanita Bonita; single-origin bean-to-bar chocolate from Auro; clothing made with woven textiles by Anthill Fabric Gallery; and more. The full list of retailers and their websites or Instagram handles can be found here.
A portion of proceeds earned on the day will be donated to Sisterworks, which empowers refugees, asylum seekers and migrants through entrepreneurship.
