Melbourne Women in Film Festival 2025
The Melbourne Women in Film Festival (MWFF) is all set for its ninth year, taking over ACMI and Fed Square over four days. Featuring a line-up of more than 40 features, shorts, workshops, the festival will focus championing the perspective and work of female and gender-diverse filmmakers.
Opening night begins with New Zealand director Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu’s joyfully rebellious We Were Dangerous, a powerful story about defiant teen girls at a remote reform school challenging an oppressive system intent on shaping them into subservient women.
Gearing you up for giggles is Audrey, a dark satirical comedy featuring Jackie van Beek (The Breaker Uppers) which received the prestigious Reframe Stamp – joining movies like Shiva Baby and Barbie. Stay after for a panel discussion with filmmakers and the Reframe founders for a talk on hiring women, non-binary and trans people in the production process.
Prepare for a night of horror and unforgiving thrill as MWFF and Tilde Film Festival present The Almost Midnight Movie Marathon, featuring a double screening of T Blockers and Grafted. MWFF’s short film program is another highlight, spotlighting themes cold feet on a wedding day to Australia’s third-wave feminism across five features.
You can also look forward to mentorship events like The Lifecycle of Film, three intimate roundtable conversations led by industry experts, and Masterclass: The Art of Visual Storytelling... on a Budget, an interactive session by art department expert Lucy Gouldthorpe (Love Me, Shantaram) on how set the look and mood of a film for less.
