Composer Joe Hisaishi will be there in person to conduct his own film scores.

Music from Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki's beloved Japanese animated films will soon be performed live by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Hamer Hall.

Making the event particularly special, Miyazaki's 30-plus year collaborator and composer Joe Hisaishi will be there in person to conduct the MSO. This will be the first performance of the concert outside of Japan.

Hisaishi will lead performances of celebrated Studio Ghibli classics including Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro and the Oscar-winning Spirited Away. The orchestra will be accompanied by cinematic montages from the films.

Sweeping and romantic, the heavily orchestrated compositions fuse both western and Japanese classical traditions.

Performances from 7.30pm. Tickets go on sale 10am Monday February 12.
