Two giants of 20th-century photography come together in a new exhibition revealing unexpected connections across continents.

For the first time, the visionary work of American-born artist Man Ray is brought into dialogue with the work of acclaimed Australian photographer Max Dupain in an ambitious new exhibition at Heide Museum of Modern Art. Including more than 200 photographic prints, May Ray and Max Dupain explores how these two modernist pioneers experimented with surrealist imagery, abstraction and avant-garde techniques in careers that, combined, spanned much of the 20th century.

Running from August 6 to November 9, the exhibition highlights the parallels across the two artists’ practices, from nude studies, still life and portraiture through to more commercial works in the realm of fashion and advertising. It also dives into their creative and romantic partnerships – like Man Ray’s love affair and long-time friendship with muse and collaborator Lee Miller, and Dupain’s childhood friendship, and brief marriage, with fellow photographer Olive Cotton – shedding light on how these dynamics shaped each artist’s creative trajectory.

Curated by Heide’s artistic director Lesley Harding and Emmanuelle de l’Ecotais, independent curator and artistic director of Photo Days in Paris, Man Ray and Max Dupain is a celebration of technical and artistic innovation, and a rare opportunity to see how two artists were engaged in a simpatico visual dialogue despite working continents apart.
