Head to the newly renovated Belleville this Sunday for a screening of the documentary The Man From Mo’ Wax. The film – which screened at MIFF this year – looks at the career of British electronic music icon James Lavelle and includes appearances from Massive Attack, Futura 2000, Grandmaster Flash, Ian Brown and Thom Yorke.
Via his label Mo’Wax, Lavelle was responsible for launching the careers of DJ Shadow (who’s 1996 record Endtroducing… is considered an underground classic), and DJ Krush (who pioneered Japanese hip-hop). The label also released hip-hop maverick Kool Kieth's seminal Dr. Octagon record Dr. Octagonecologyst.
The film, which uses footage that spans 30 years, gives viewers a look behind the curtain at an exciting era of British music, and documents the rise and fall of the Mo’ Wax label.
The free afterparty following the screening will feature New Zealand’s DJs Vee and Rintrah, JPS and Sean Deans of Melbourne collective The Operatives, and Agent 86.
Screening starts at 8.30pm.
