It's a rare chance to hear from the iconic Russian artist and activist – and meet her virtually. Sign up for free access now.

Rising – a new festival to take the place of White Night and the Melbourne International Arts Festival – has a special event planned ahead of its inaugural run next winter.

At this fraught political moment, the festival’s hosting a free, live-streamed conversation with iconic artist, activist and Pussy Riot co-founder Nadya Tolokonnikova.

For her art and activism criticising Russian conservatism, Tolokonnikova was imprisoned in the notorious IK-14 penal colony; forced to work long, gruelling days sewing police uniforms; subjected to violence; and undertook hunger strikes to protest the treatment of herself and her fellow inmates. She now works to encourage societal change with her art.

Tolokonnikova will be joined by celebrated First Nations choreographer Amrita Hepi to discuss the intersection of personal experience with political art. There will be time at the end of the event to ask your own questions too. From 5pm.

You’ll need to sign up to the event to receive the Zoom link. Sign up here.
