293-297 Lygon Street Carlton 3053
Price: $15
These decadent breadcrumb-coated, flash-fried mozzarella toasties will be available for three days only.

Right now King & Godfree is celebrating 150 years with a six-month program of meals and events, focusing on a different ingredient or pantry staple each month until January 2022. In September it was pasta, with a special cooking class hosted by Julia Busuttil Nishimura. And October is all about cheese.

For one weekend, the Carlton deli is slinging mozzarella in carrozza – aka fried cheese toasties – with help from formaggio aficionado Maker & Monger. The decadent sanga features mozzarella and puttanesca stuffed between two slices of fluffy white bread, which is then crusted with breadcrumbs and flash-fried. It’s served with fresh passata for you to pour or dip into.

The partnership with Maker & Monger continues with a new picnic box, made in collaboration with urban beekeeper Nic Dowse of Honey Fingers. It includes Italian cheeses, Honey Fingers’ dark honey and fresh honeycomb, and a sliced baguette, water crackers, fresh strawberries and muscatels from King & Godfree.

The mozzarella in carrozza cost $15 each, while the picnic packs are $110 each and feeds two.
