The Jewish International Film Festival returns to Melbourne’s Classic and Lido cinemas this month, featuring 65 films from 26 different countries.

The program includes The Rebel in the Rye, a biopic of JD Salinger starring Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as the Catcher in the Rye author, with Kevin Spacey (American Beauty) playing his mentor.

The opening night on October 25 features the Australian premiere of Menashe, a Yiddish-language drama that follows a widowed father struggling to keep custody of his young son in New York’s Hasidic Jewish community.

Scaffolding, which won Best Israeli Feature Film at the 2017 Jerusalem Film Festival, is also showing.

The festival also includes a live jazz night in partnership with the Jewish Museum of Australia’s Amy Winehouse exhibition, following the screening of Body and Soul: An American Bridge on November 2.

Eastern European treats and desserts will be served between sessions of The Russian Jews trilogy on November 19.

Producers will introduce some movie screenings, while directors will host Q&A sessions after some of their films.
