International Women’s Day at ACMI

A special celebration of women and non-binary folk through the mediums of cinema, music, virtual reality, workshops, light installations and more.

On Friday March 8, ACMI will celebrate women and non-binary artists with a night of talks, dancing, video games and drinks.

The centrepiece – an hour-long panel discussion “Where to from here?” moderated by Leila Gurruwiwi (Mangarook Footy Show) – features a bank of local creators and thinkers, including dancer Bhenji Ra, journalist and filmmaker Santilla Chingaipe (Date My Race, Black As Me), writer/performer Nayuka Gorrie (Black Comedy), artist and writer Atong Atem and video game producer Lisy Kane (Girl Geek Academy, League of Geeks).

There’ll be a women-focused tour of ACMI’s permanent Screen Worlds exhibition, a gamers club for women and non-binary players, MzRizk, Santilla Chingaipe, Atong Atem, Bhenji Ra, Nayuka Gorrie and Sarah Guppy will be DJing over six hours in a one-off space designed by creative collective Tszuj, and there will be a voguing workshop at 9.30pm hosted by Bhenji Ra & House of Slé. Joan Ross’s debut VR work Did you ask the river? will be playing late into the evening.
