Hutong Dumpling Bar to Pop Up at NGV Friday Nights
The NGV’s annual Friday Nights series of gigs held in the gallery’s Great Hall has proved a reliable entry in the city’s social calendar in recent years. This winter they’re going to make proceedings even more attractive with the addition of a Hutong Dumpling Bar pop-up.
The Market Lane institution’s head chef, Yibo Wang, will takeover the gallery’s kitchen and serve up soupy Shanghainese dumplings every Friday night in winter. With both classics and new flavours on the bill, Hutong’s menu makes an ideal cold-weather accompaniment to the sounds of some of Australia’s brightest musicians.
Kicking off with Husky on Friday May 31, highlights of the 20-act musical series include Sydney’s impressionistic soul singer Ngaiire, rising Brisbane house producer Young Franco, shape-shifting art/music hybrid acts Sui Zhen and Rainbow Chan, national radio favourites Slum Sociable and Kira Puru, and emerging electronic artists Graace and Clypso.
Those in attendance will also have access to pop-up bars and the gallery’s full Melbourne Winter Masterpieces program, including Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality, plus Hutong’s cooking demonstration in the NGV Gallery Kitchen, “designed to evoke the ambience of our dumpling houses”, according to Wang.
