Lakes Entrance is the mainspring of Victorian seafood on many Melbourne menus. Commercial fishers, including the esteemed local co-op, drop a line here, as does the recreational lure-throwing devotee.
On Sunday March 11 this coastal town will celebrate all things seafood with one-day festival Hooked on Lakes. Held along the Lakes Entrance Foreshore, Hooked on Lakes celebrates and showcases the vast array of Victorian seafood caught by commercial and recreational fishers.
Punters can learn tricks of the trade, such as how to fillet a fish and other fish-prep tips from experts including fishing adventurer Aaron Habgood. There will be cooking demonstrations by Nick Mahlook from The Atlantic at Southbank; local chef Sam Mahlook from Miriam’s Seafood Restaurant; and Masterchef finalists Eliza Wilson and Sam Goodwin.
If you’re yet to drop a line but would like to learn, Fishcare will run a Come and Try fishing clinic to help you with your line-throwing game, and commercial fishers will be docked at the wharf to explain their fishing practices and life at sea.
Food stalls will be selling freshly cooked seafood and locally made produce, alongside other market stalls and kids activities.
