Redroom Theatre presents Himmelweg, the devastating story of real-life events that took place during World War II. A tale of propaganda at its most horrifying, the play recounts June 23, 1944, when the Red Cross were permitted an inspection of Theresienstadt Concentration Camp by Nazi Soldiers. A chillingly peaceful community of Jewish people was what met their search, yet they gradually discovered that this was a radical act designed to quell genocide rumours. The camp’s prisoners were compelled to role-play and rehearse scenes, in a performance that their lives counted on. “Way to Heaven”, the English translation of the German “Himmelweg”, is what Nazi Soldiers named the path leading into the extermination camps.

Written by acclaimed Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga, Himmelweg premiered at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2005, and now makes its first appearance in Melbourne in a visionary production directed by Alister Smith.
