Helmut Newton: In Focus at the Jewish Museum of Australia
Dubbed the “king of kink”, the prolific and perennially provocative Helmut Newton was one of the 20th century’s most in-demand fashion photographers.
He shot such icons as Grace Jones, Claudia Schiffer and even Margaret Thatcher. And his often sexually charged work was a mainstay in international fashion magazines from Vanity Fair to Vogue (including more than 60 covers for Vogue Italia.)
With Helmut Newton: In Focus – a new collaboration between the Jewish Museum of Australia and the Photo 2022 International Festival of Photography – the German-Australian’s life and boundary-pushing career is being put under the microscope.
The major exhibition explores Newton’s Jewish roots, his early years and how his time in Australia helped shape his career. And original research undertaken by the Jewish Museum’s curatorial team ensures it’s a comprehensive survey.
Expect to see some of his most iconic, recognisable works, alongside a carefully curated collection of letters and diary entries from the Helmut Newton Foundation.
