Hear My Eyes: Memento at Hamer Hall

Twenty-six years since its release, Memento still feels like a cinematic puzzle box set to detonate. Christopher Nolan’s breakthrough second feature introduced the narrative sleight of hand, obsessive structure and temporal gymnastics that would come to define his blockbuster era. Now, in a new collaboration between Arts Centre Melbourne and Melbourne International Film Festival, the film is reimagined as an immersive audiovisual performance.

At the centre is drummer Michael “Cavs” Cavanagh of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, performing solo across multiple drum kits and a suite of electronic instruments. His score mirrors Leonard Shelby’s fractured memory with rhythmic loops, sudden ruptures and mechanical precision that reflect the film’s collapsing sense of time.

Presented as part of Hear My Eyes’ ongoing series of expanded cinema events, the performance continues the program’s decade-long exploration of cult and genre films re-scored by contemporary artists. Past events have included Terminator 2: Judgment Day with a score by Belgian electronic artist Peter Van Hoesen and Two Hands re-scored by local outfit The Murlocs.
