Make like its protagonist and relive the timeless story of Groundhog Day, adapted for stage with music by Tim Minchin, set for a 13-week run at the Princess Theatre.

Now over 30 years old, few films have left a cultural footprint like Groundhog Day (1993), the title of which has elevated its context to coin the unsatisfying feeling of a repetitive time loop. The movie’s hilarious – yet poignant – story of redemption has undergone a theatrical evolution by director Matthew Warchus, original writer Danny Rubin, and beloved wit Tim Minchin on music. After earning critical acclaim and flowers, including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical, during stints in London and Broadway, Groundhog Day is prepped to take over the Princess Theatre this summer for a 13-week run.

The musical follows its source, tracking Phil Connors, a pessimistic TV weatherman, who gets caught in a time loop on an assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day tradition in the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Forced to live this same day over and over, Connors confronts his own character, immortality and loneliness.

Audiences shouldn’t expect a play-by-play of the film, despite the source material. Instead, expect Tim Minchin’s specific flavour of thoughtful and sharp humour embedded into this non-traditional musical.
