When Good Beer Week started 10 years ago, there were 50 events on the program. Now there are more than 200, running the gamut from meet-the-brewer sessions and industry panels to decadent long lunches and even a swell and pint at Urbnsurf.
The celebration of beer is making up for lost time after going virtual last year – this time it stretches over 10 days.
It kicks off with a massive party at Fed Square, with beers on tap from Boatrocker, Stomping Ground, Modus Operandi, Hop Nation and Bridge Road Brewers, plus Britpop tunes courtesy of Major Bummer and friends.
There's a non-alcoholic event for the first time, featuring Upflow Brewing drops paired with a four-course lunch by Henry Sugar. Other food-and-beer pairings include a seasonal feast from the chef behind Heartswood, paired with Wildflower, Molly Rose and Boatrocker beers and curated wines from Blackhearts & Sparrows; a Chin Chin feast from Moon Dog; an exploration of fermentation at Zymurgy, with courses by chef Julian Hills of Navi; and a milk bar of hop-filled pastries and pleasures from New Zealand's Garage Project at Falco Bakery.
Get lucky at Colonial Brewing Co's Draught Punk, with unreleased brews and electronic duo Discovery playing hits from Daft Punk's discography; watch wrestlers throw each other around as you throw back inventive Moon Dog beers; ride a wave at Urbnsurf before a beer-matched lunch at Three Blue Ducks; and sip beers by a winemaker alongside wine by a brewer.
There are events to deepen your knowledge too, and panels that give a deeper look inside the local craft beer industry. The festival is more spread out this year, with events across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
