Carn the meat pies – footy finals season is here, and while we can’t fly team colours at the MCG just yet, we can at least plonk down in front of the telly and recreate the experience: bev in one hand, pie in the other.
Every week until the Grand Final, Melbourne’s finest bakeries and pie experts are teaming up with other local businesses to bring you a selection of meat pies, drinks and snacks to enjoy on the couch.
The selection changes each week – on Friday August 27 there’ll be signature cheeseburger pies from Falco Bakery alongside classic beef pies and sausage rolls from Johnny Ripe in the Mornington Peninsula and two flavours from Magnum Pi: a vegan Sri Lankan jackfruit curry pie and an Italian saltbush lamb and vegetable ragu creation.
The next Friday, September 3, will see cauliflower, leek and vintage cheddar pies and classic beef pies from Raymond Capaldi’s Wonder Pies, the same vegan number and a chicken sausage roll from Magnum Pi, and a collaboration between Yarraville neighbours Bar Romanee and Cobb Lane – the European bistro is cooking up ale-braised beef cheek in French onion soup, and the wholesale bakery is encasing it in flaky dough.
Once the rest of the AFL dates have been confirmed, there’ll also be boxes with pies from Footscray’s Pie Thief, Thai restaurant Udom House and Wildflour, which specialises in English pork pies.
Also available to add on: loukoumades (Greek doughnuts) from St Gerry’s; a cheese board from Anthony Femia’s Maker & Monger; pre-mixed drinks and spritzes from Home Grown, which uses local spirits; Sailors Grave beers; and Victorian wines.
Delivery is available within 25 kilometres of St Kilda. Order by Wednesday at 10am for delivery the following Friday.
